Technical Architecture
The ICO container
An ICO is a directory of image entries. Each entry records width, height, color depth, and the byte offset of its data. The actual pixels can be stored as a BMP style bitmap or, since Windows Vista, as a full PNG. FileMint stores 32 bit PNG data in each entry, which Microsoft recommends for large icons to keep the file small.
Multi resolution packing
The tool renders your source onto a canvas at 16, 32, 48, 64, 128, and 256 pixels, reads each as a PNG, then writes the 6 byte header, a 16 byte directory entry per size, and the concatenated image bytes. A size of 256 is stored as 0 in the one byte width field, per the spec.
Alpha transparency
At 32 bits per pixel the ICO carries an 8 bit alpha channel, so soft shadows and anti aliased edges survive. If your source has no transparency, a transparent export still produces fully opaque pixels; switch to a solid background if you want a filled tile.
Size of 0 means 256
The ICONDIRENTRY width and height fields are one byte and cannot hold 256. Microsoft's convention is to write 0 to mean 256 pixels. The encoder follows this so the 256 pixel layer is valid on Windows.
