What is JPG to PNG?
Converting JPGs to PNGs is often necessary when you need to add transparency to an image (since JPG does not support alpha channels). Our client-side converter uses the native browser rendering engine to decode the JPG and re-encode it as a lossless PNG, meaning you bypass upload limits completely.
A note about file privacy

How the browser converts JPG to PNG
The tool loads your JPG into an Image element, draws it onto an HTML canvas with `drawImage`, then calls `canvas.toBlob(callback, 'image/png')`. Because PNG is the default export type and is required by every browser, the encode is reliable. The canvas decode step reads the JPG's pixels; the PNG encode writes them back with DEFLATE-based lossless compression. No re-compression of the JPG occurs — the pixel data is simply reinterpreted into a lossless container. Lossless vs lossy: what actually changes
JPEG uses lossy DCT compression designed for photos, so some detail is already gone in the source. PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression (per the PNG spec at https://www.w3.org/TR/png/), so once decoded the pixels are stored exactly. Converting JPG→PNG cannot restore lost detail, but it prevents new loss. PNG files are typically larger than their JPG sources because photographic data does not compress well without discarding information.
Color spaces: sRGB, CMYK, and the canvas
Web browsers decode JPGs in the sRGB color space by default. CMYK JPEGs — common from print workflows and Adobe 'four-component' JPEGs — are not part of the JFIF/YCbCr model browsers expect, so they may fail to decode or render with wrong colors. Transparency and alpha
JPG has no alpha channel, so your source is fully opaque. The PNG output does support an 8-bit alpha channel, which means the file is now capable of holding transparency if you later edit it (for example, cutting out a subject). The conversion itself won't invent transparency, but it removes the JPG limitation. PNG stores this in an optional alpha channel or a tRNS chunk, per the spec.
Browser support and limits
`toBlob` with `image/png` is supported across all modern browsers (Chrome 50+, Edge 79+, Firefox 18+, Safari 11+, and their mobile equivalents) — see the compatibility table at https://caniuse.com/mdn-api_htmlcanvaselement_toblob_type_parameter_png. Very large images (tens of megapixels) are processed in memory, so conversion time and peak RAM scale with pixel count. There is no server round-trip, which is why the tool also works offline.
File size reality check
Expect PNG output to be larger than the JPG input for photos — often 3x to 6x. This is the cost of lossless storage. For line art, screenshots, and graphics with flat color, PNG can actually be smaller than a high-quality JPG. What to expect on file size
